Nashville History

Disputed Territory

Seventeenth Century Nashville

In the early years of United States history, Tennessee and Nashville (neither yet so named) were included among the first lines of unexplored territory west of the Appalachian Mountain chain. As such, the land was ripe for early westward exploration by eager adventurers.

The first explorers included trappers and fur traders who made first contact with the Indian populations who hunted in the Nashville basin because of its rich, diverse fauna.

As the volume of people expanded into the territory, forts and trading stations were established, bringing along with them conflict with the Indians.

The links embedded in this section explore some of those forts, trading stations and people.
