Nineteenth Century Nashville

Like much of the South, Nineteenth Century Nashville was a time of sweeping change. There were high times, and some of the lowest.

The early part of the century was dominated by agricultural and the trade and transporation industry that fed off it. Grand plantations dotted the landscape, including one owned by one of the wealthiest women in the South.

During the years of the Civil War, 1862 - 1865, the city went from a land of successionists, to being occupied by foreign troops. But due to its importance as a city as a central hub of transporation, Nashville survived and even thrived.

A fierce battle raged in December of 1864, when the Confederacy tried unsuccessfully to recapture the city, in what many consider to be a last bid for survival. Thousands of soldiers died, but the city itself remained fairly unscathed.

1897, highlighted an age of renewal with the eyes of the world focused on Centennial Park.

Tough times build devotion. Thanks to the generous efforts of countless Nashville citizens, a great deal of the city's history from this era has been lovingly preserved and restored.

The links embedded in this section point to some of the highlights of these preservation efforts.
